A Brief Portrait
Michelle Mariposa is an award winning Filipino-Chinese mezzo-soprano, praised for her “rich,
powerful mezzo” (Parterre Box), “quicksilver coloratura, attention to detail, and spellbinding
dramatic energy.” (The Washington Post) She is a Grand Finals Winner of the 2025 Metropolitan
Opera Laffont Competition, awarded the Faith P. Geier Award, as well a 2023 Sullivan Award
Winner of the Sullivan Foundation. Michelle is a Cafritz Young Artist with the Washington National Opera.
In the 2025-2026 season, Michelle makes role debuts as Prince Orlofsky (Die Fledermaus) with
the Washington Opera Society, and as Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro), The Fox and the Rose
(The Little Prince), Sophie (Mickey Dee and the Eclipse - World premiere), and Rebecca Nurse
(The Crucible), all with the Washington National Opera. She also makes a role and house
debuts with the Glimmerglass Festival as Dorabella (Così fan tutte) and Suzuki (Madama Butterfly).
Michelle has been a Richard Gaddes Festival Artist and a Gerdine Young Artist with the Opera
Theater of Saint Louis. She has also been a young artist with the Chicago Opera Theater and
the Chicago College of Performing Arts, the Santa Fe Opera, and Teatro Nuovo.
Michelle holds a Masters in Music from Northwestern University, and Bachelor degrees in
Psychology and Voice from the University of the Philippines.
